5 Tips to Take Control of your Identity PDF Print E-mail

  1. Be Careful With Your Email:
Don’t be naïve with your email. Do not give out your personal information to anyone you don’t know. Especially if they claim to be a rich, long-lost relative in Nigeria who just needs your bank account so they can deposit money. This may seem like a childish suggestion, but the scam emails can get more elaborate and convincing. For instance, a new trend is a scammer claiming that they can get you qualified for a piece of government stimulus money. If you have any doubts with an email, consult with a professional.
  2. Adware, Spyware, and Fake Websites:
Scan any software you download before you install it. Malicious software can store every key stroke of your computer. All your user-names and passwords can be in the hands of a theft if you’re careless with what programs you install on your computer. When banking online or submitting any personal information, check if the website you’re on isn’t a fake. To tell, look at the address of the website. All websites that require personal information will be secure and thus will start with HTTPS:// instead of HTTP.

  3. Destroy All Discarded Personal Information:
Investing in an inexpensive Paper Shredder is a good start in the right direction, but there is more to this than just shredding junk mail and old statements. When recycling personal electronics, remove all personal information from the device. If it is a computer, it would be a good idea to reformat the hard drive before giving it away.

  4. Monitor Your Credit Report And Credit Scores:
Once a year you are entitled to a free credit report. Take advantage of this opportunity to ensure no abnormal activity has occured on your credit.  Credit flaws can prevent you from future purchases and can negatively alter your ability to get loans.

  5. Makes things easier with a credit monitoring service:
You have a busy life and can’t monitor your identity 24/7. Luckily there are companies which will help with the safety of your identity.  These companies will releieve your of your stress of continually having to monitor if your identity is safe.  Two greate companies for identity protection are LifeLock and TrustedID Identity Theft Protection.
